RIP Garrett B Clark 1944 - 2017
At 9:43am today this world lost a hero. My father passed this morning surrounded by love and ready for the next stage beyond this life.
He was an inspiration.
Some of you know this, but Garrett was a paraplegic, confined to a wheelchair for the last 30+ years. During that time he raised children, traveled the world and helped hundreds of people in his community.
In his lifetime he saved beached whales, crashed helicopters, hitch hiked through Central America and rescued men in Vietnam against direct orders. He wasn't a big fan of authority.
This was a full life, often times lived on the razor's edge - but that's how he liked it.
His willingness to help others seemed to know no bounds. He would literally give the shirt off his back if you asked (if he was wearing one, which was rare!)
In his time here he taught me many lessons, but I'd like to share two of them that have continually struck me as powerful.
Lesson #1. We have the power to choose.
Bad shit happens. Circumstances will be out of our control... but we can choose to respond however we want, or more specifically how we train ourselves to respond.
I asked him one morning when I was 7 years old... "dad, aren't you MAD that you're in a wheelchair?"
He replied.. "No. because I could be mad, and I'd still be in a wheelchair... so instead I choose to be happy, and be in a wheelchair."
He lived this every single day. He was cracking jokes right until the end.
We can't always choose our circumstances, but we can choose our state.
Lesson #2. Go for what you want.
Physically this man was quite limited, yet he never let that stop him from living fully.
Whatever it is you want in life that you're making excuses about why you can't do it... check yourself. See your bullshit and limiting beliefs for what they are and go get it done.
Dad you were a force of love and light, and you will be missed badly.
If you have a fun story or great photo of my dad post it in the comments below.
Eternal love for you.
